What a steady growth record tells you, and what it doesn't
Two companies can grow sales from $1 billion to $1.6 billion over five years. One gets there a step at a time, year after year. The other gets there in lurches, with big jumps and sharp drops along the way. They end in the same place, but only one gives you a record you can reasonably project forward.
The growth side of RightStock's "Fit Score" looks at both how fast a company's sales and earnings have grown and how consistently. It weighs the five-year and ten-year record, recent results, and whether earnings are keeping pace with sales. In this session, I'll walk through what each piece tells you, use live examples to show how companies with similar growth can earn very different reads, and connect it back to the Stock Selection Guide, where a consistent history helps keep your own growth estimates grounded.

Wayne A. Thorp is CEO of BetterInvesting, the nonprofit that has taught individual investors fundamental stock analysis since 1951. Before joining BetterInvesting in 2025, he spent 28 years at the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII), rising to Vice President and Head of Research and Analysis, where he created AAII Growth Investing and the AI-driven Sentiment Investing service and helped build the Stock Superstars Report, AAII Dividend Investing, VMQ Stocks, and A+ Investor. At BetterInvesting, he developed the initial framework for RightStock, the organization's stock evaluation product. He has written more than 1,000 investment research articles and has been quoted frequently in The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch. A CFA charterholder and DePaul University finance graduate, he is a Michigan native who lives in rural Illinois.
