Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting was held on August 14th 2025.  Our guest speaker was Betsy Wills, Director of Rocky Mountain Chapter and founder of an investment club.  Her topic covered:

The Size Effect: How Small Stocks Came to be Part of a Well-Diversified Portfolio

Have you considered how small-cap stocks became integral to a diversified portfolio? The Capital Asset Pricing Model (Calm), the first formal asset-pricing model developed in the early 1960s, is extensively utilized in finance to guide investors on expected returns relative to risk. However, a significant breakthrough occurred in 1981 with the discovery of the "Size Effect," which identified a correlation between a company's size and its returns. This discussion will cover CAPM, the "Size Effect," its impact, and how including small-cap stocks in a portfolio can balance risk and potentially enhance returns. Additionally, we may explore the use of predefined Small Company and A-List stock screens in the SSGPlus for a swift visual evaluation of the stocks on these lists..

Taking Stock Investment Club

The AZ Chapter Visited Taking Stock Investment Club/TSIC… and then this happened….

Back in 2016 our club was visited by 2 members of BetterInvestings's AZ Chapter Board, Madeline Carragher and Frank Lyons. We later found out that they are volunteers who donate their time and expertice to investment clubs all over Arizona.
They asked us about our club and how long we've been investing as a club. They reviewed our portfolio and gave us tips on diversification. Then they asked about our use of SSGs but, sadly, we had to confide that only one member of TSIC was a BI / BetterInvesting member and, believe it or not, we really didn’t even know how to use SSGs! Madeline and Frank explained the basics and how to apply BI principles and methods. It was a pivotal moment for our club! We started using SSGs to choose and watch stocks. Our portfolio performance improved within just a few months. Looking back from the end of 2016 to 2025 TSIC’s unit value has increased over 200%! A few guests joined TSIC because they could see TSIC was following, and most of all, TEACHING what BI has been promoting for years! The more we learned, the more TSIC’s portfolio grew. One of the most interesting points came when we made a mistake and we learned how to not only recover but how to avoid the issue in the future. By reading the BI magazine we learned to stay current with stock market behaviors and learn what fundamental factors are involved. Today, all TSIC members are BI members and our SSGs are the basis for all of our buy and sell stock decisions. Thank you again Madeline and Frank for your visit to TSIC almost 10 years ago. I hope more clubs in AZ take the opportunity to have a Club Visit from the AZ Chapter!
